Week 2: Does Digital Culture Make Us Smarter or Dumber?

This week’s readings provide an introduction to digital culture and some of the debates that have circulated around the “new literacies” that computers and other digital technologies promote. The chapter from Mark Bauerlein’s book Dumbest Generation–whose title should tell you something about his position in these debates–is not now available yet. I will post it as soon as I get the .pdf from inter-library loan. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, go ahead and start reading the other pieces.

Your assignment before we next meet is to post a 100-300 word blog response to the readings (see Blog instructions, for details and due dates). You might look at the Critical Review handout if you are having trouble figuring out what (and how) to write.

Also, remember to review the assigned reading on blogging and commenting as genres of writing. A blog post is a little different from a regular academic essay. These links will help you understand how:

I look forward to reading your thoughts.
